Matthew started painting in 2008, originally inspired to capture his experiences walking in wild and remote places in a more meaningful way.
He travels extensively in the UK and the Nordic regions in the search for subject matter, focussing on the intricate patterns and relationships in the landscape and the influence of natural processes, especially the effects of water and ice.
Matthew’s textured mixed media abstracts often start with a quite small detail from the landscape, letting the shapes and patterns evolve on the surface into paintings rich in texture and blended colour.
With a Maths degree as background and interests in geology and physical geography, all of these influences can be seen in Matthew’s work. Matthew also works and tutors in watercolour, and has previously exhibited in group shows in London and Essex. He held his successful debut solo exhibition “Residue” at a London gallery in October 2018.
